The Second Law of Thermodynamics (or, Law of Entropy), by guest contributor Dr. Allan H. Harvey
Many Christians, hoping to defend their belief in Creation, and critics of evolution have invoked the "Second Law of Thermodynamics" (sometimes called the "Law of Entropy") as a proof of the impossibility or absurdity of the tenets of evolution and the suggestion that life (be it some sort of DNA, virus, or living cell) created itself independently, by chance alone, without Divine agency or Intelligent Design.  As popular as it is when "preaching to the choir", it really is not a truthful or valid argument.
It's been my intention to write about this and explain the 2nd Law but, luckily I found the article presented here, first.  I don't think I could do any better than this excellent exposition by Dr. Allan H. Harvey, so by his grace and with his permission, I refer it to you instead.
Take note of his mention of "Information Theory".  Though information theory is not going to give any absolute refutation of evolution or spontaneous biogenesis (life creating itself) either, it really is more apropros to the kind of argument the critics, who use the 2nd Law, are trying to make.  To wit: if we understand that even the simplest life form is the result of an incredible amount of information (and I do mean "Incredible"), we cannot say that it absolutely could not, by chance, just happen to appear on its own but we certainly can argue that it is EXTREMELY unlikely.  It is, indeed, about as unlikely as grains of sand assembling themselves into letters and writing out an encyclopedia.  But, in all honesty, the same set of laws and probabilities that give substance and form to the laws of Quantum Mechanics (which I have shown also make perfectly logical and reasonable that God is exactly who and what He - and we - say He is) do allow for such an extremely unlikely thing to happen.  As always, it all boils down to a choice: what do you (or they) choose to believe - chance or God.
That choice is a very personal decision, and Scripture shows clearly that God both allows it and honors it.  But I continue to believe and act in faith that some of those decisions will be influenced by (at the very least) by the witness of the Bible, and that 3500 year-old story of creation in Genesis 1 & 2.  It is also rather improbable that that story could have been written by chance, but ... we know that some would rather believe it was just a lucky guess by some ancient Jewish scribe!
